MOBILE, Ala. – The Cottage Hill Christian Academy School Committee has named Jimmy Messer as head of school of the 55-year-old Christian school, a ministry of Cottage Hill Baptist Church.
Messer is currently the athletic director at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, where he has also served in various other positions including dean of students, teacher and coach. Previously, Messer worked in administration at the collegiate level at Enterprise State Community College and University of Mobile.
“After hearing the vision of the search committee and of Pastor Alan Floyd, I believe Cottage Hill Christian Academy has unlimited potential,” said Messer. He added that he is excited to “be a part of helping CHCA become the premier Christian school in Mobile.”
Cottage Hill Baptist Church Pastor Alan Floyd said, “Jimmy Messer is God’s man to further advance the excellence of Cottage Hill Christian Academy. His reputation throughout the greater Mobile area is what drew us to him. He is known as a man of vision and integrity. Throughout the process, it became very clear to our search team that God was leading us to Mr. Messer. We are blessed to have him join and lead the Warrior family.”
Messer will start his new position July 18th. He succeeds Jim McMillan, who resigned in June. Messer will lead administrators at both the high school and preschool-8th grade campuses in academics, spiritual development, athletics and fundraising.
CHCA School Committee Chair Paul Carter, owner of The Paul Carter Agency in Mobile, expressed his enthusiasm over Messer’s appointment. “I am extremely pleased to have Jimmy Messer join the CHCA family. He is a proven leader and a committed follower of our Lord. He is known throughout the Mobile area for his high energy, integrity and work ethic. I look forward to greater days ahead.”
Messer described his philosophy on Christian education.
“Schools affect the beliefs and value system of all the students under their influence. It is becoming increasingly more important that we place our children in an environment that prepares them to live lives that reflect, serve and honor God. God created each of our students to live wonderful fulfilling lives and we want to help them realize this amazing potential through a commitment to Jesus Christ,” he said.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Messer holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Health, Physical Education and Recreation, both from University of Mobile. He also studied educational administration at Columbus State University.
He began his career in coaching as varsity boys basketball coach for Monroe Academy in Monroeville, Ala., assistant men’s basketball coach for Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga., and then assistant men’s basketball coach at University of Mobile before moving to administration as director of student development at University of Mobile. Prior to joining St. Paul’s Episcopal School, Messer served as athletic director, head of the Physical Education Department and head men’s basketball coach at Enterprise State Community College in Enterprise, Ala. During his tenure at St. Paul’s, Messer held the positions of varsity boys' basketball coach, dean of students and currently athletic director. While there he oversaw the improvement of athletic facilities, supervised the reorganization of the athletic department in areas of eligibility and game management, increased opportunities in the area of youth sports, coordinated spiritual activities, and supervised day-to-day operations of the upper school. He has been involved in fundraising and served on the school’s executive council. He is currently the winningest boys basketball coach in St. Paul’s history, having won 165 games and averaging over 18 wins per season.
He is married to April Glasscock Messer, and they have two daughters, Mallory and Macy. They are members of Wilmer Baptist Church.
