Drivers’ Education is a great addition to our academic offerings on the high school campus. The summer drivers’ education course is an accelerated course for student drivers who already have behind-the-wheel experience. Students who have not spent much time on the road should enroll in the semester-long course offered in the fall and spring of the academic year. Students may earn ½ elective credit for successful completion of the course.

The goal of the Drivers’ Education program is to equip students to be safe, responsible drivers who are competent and more confident behind the wheel. Throughout the course, students will complete the course of study laid out by the Alabama State Department of Education.

The State of Alabama allows students who have successfully demonstrated driving skills under the direction of a certified drivers’ education instructor to obtain their Alabama driver’s license in lieu of completing the road test at the DMV. However, it is important to note that obtaining a driver’s license is not guaranteed as a part of successful completion of the course. Students must pass the road-test portion of the course in accordance with ALEA standards to be eligible for this benefit. Boating safety will also be covered, and students will have the opportunity to add a boating endorsement to their license by passing the exam given in class.

In order to enroll in CHCA Drivers’ Education, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Students must hold a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license
  • Parents must complete a permission form to be kept on file in the office.

The course fee is $300. Course fees will be due to the CHCA West Campus Office (7355 Creekwood Dr.) by May 22, 2024. We will make every effort to accommodate as many students in the class as possible, but please note that space is limited.

Before the on-the-road driving instruction begins, students will need to study the Alabama Drivers Manual and pass an online test over the material. Access to the material and to the test will be granted through Google Classroom and will be available on May 29. Student drivers will then complete four sessions with our certified driving instructor. Driving sessions are available on the following dates:

  • June 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 25, 26, 27
  • Two sessions each day – 8:00-9:30 am and 10:00-11:30 am
  • Students should sign up to drive on four dates

Parents and students should join the class Remind to receive updates.
