Welcome to the Cottage Hill Cross Country Program's Homepage!

Our XC program completed its fourth year in the AHSAA and our second year at 1A-2A this past fall of 2011. Our varsity program ranges in grades of 7th grade through 12th; from beginners to multiple season performers. We also have a 5th-6th grade Running Club that competes in SAISTA from August-October. Each year, we look to continue to build upon each season as we put an emphasis on each athlete doing his/her best, giving 100% effort, and encouraging one another not just in our sport, but also in life. Our athletes not only train to become better runners, but learn how and why the training he/she does develops him/her into a stronger runner. We start smart and finish hard.

What did the team accomplish in 2011?

Our Girl's Team:
For the third straight year, a majority of our athletes were new to the team. We had two returning seniors, Haley Bennett and Erin Farill, and one returning sophomore. Most of the season was spent in getting our team some experience and helping our girls to understand how to race. At Jesse Owens Classic, all of our girls finished with seasonal best times and gave our team that race experience we needed. Our girls finished 4th overall in the Green Division with both Erin Farill and Anna Strachan earning medals. Through the remainder of the season, we had some excellent individual finishes. Erin Farill was able to improve the 5K time school record for girls to 20:38 at County Championships and earned All-County honors. At Sectionals, our girls finished 3rd, qualifying a team to the AHSAA State meet, the first in school history. Overall, our girls finished well and as a team we finished 9th. We hope to return all our freshman and 8th graders and build upon this season. We will miss Haley Bennett, Erin Farill, and Anna Strachan.

Our Boy's Team:
The 2011 team had twenty high school athletes with fifteen returning athletes from previous seasons. We started the season off with a victory against St. Paul's at a dual meet. Our first victory over St. Paul's ever. We then competed in the Challenge of Champions Invite, finishing 6th overall, beating out great competition. As the season continued to progress, we had individual top ten finishes in most meets with two team victories, Jesse Owens Classic and the Foley Invitational. At Jesse Owens, we competed up a level in the Bronze Division, besting perennial 3A powerhouse Randolph. At County Championships, our boy's finished 3rd overall, our highest team finish ever, beating out UMS-Wright and St. Paul's. At Sectionals in Tuscaloosa, our boys defeated American Christian and other sectional opponents to give us our program's second consecutive Sectional Championship and qualify our boy's team to state a third year in a row. At State, our boys finished as State Champions, defeating Hatton, three-time 1A/2A State Champion, soundly by 37 points. Colby Verdin (6th), Dylan Schmitz (9th), Justen Kinder (10th), and Jonathan Stringfellow (13th) each earned All-State honors.

What can we expect for 2012?

Our Girl's Team:
For the 2012 season, our girls will be competing at the 3A classification in the AHSAA for the third year after competing in 1A/2A for two season. We will hopefully be returning four athletes from last season and hope grow upon last season. Our goal is to qualify our girl's team to the State Meet a second year in a row as we continue to do all things with excellence and commit to working hard as a team.

Our Boy's Team:
With seven of our boys graduating, one would think that next season would be a growing year, however, if all our underclassman return, we have a chance of competing for the 3A State Championship. Our boy's program has tasted some success in 2010 and 2011, and we are still growing from these experiences. We will continue to learn how to compete as a team and do it humbly. We will have high expectations for our athletes and team.

Our History!

AHSAA:
In our first four seasons in the AHSAA, we have qualified seven individual athletes, three boys team, and one girls team for the AHSAA State meet. In those four seasons, we had ten All-State runners, Danielle Norris—2008 and 2009; Jean-Luc Currie—2009; Erin Farill—2010, Colby Verdin—2010 and 2011; Dylan Schmitz—2010 and 2011; Justen Kinder—2011; Jonathan Stringfellow—2011.

AISA:
In five seasons in AISA, our boy's program were State Champions in 2004 and Runner's Up in 2006 and 2007. Our girl's program were Runners Up in 2004. In the 2007 season, Danielle Norris finished the season undefeated and as State Champion.
