Boy's Cross Country Coach of the Year
Article from Mobile Press Register
Congratulations to Coach Joe Swagart for winning the Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year Award! After a fantastic victory at the 1A and 2A state championship, Coach Swagart could not be more proud of his team. "What really helped us was that we had an experienced team mixed with some inexperience," said Swagart. "Some of our kids put aside personal ambitions to ensure success at the state championships." In the coming up year, the Cross Country team will be losing seven valuable seniors; but fortunately have plenty of talented students left to carry on the example left by these trail blazing seniors. Coach Swagart displays that with time, dedication, faith, and hard work… NOTHING is impossible for the Cottage Hill Warriors! When our God is for us, then who can ever stop us? Congratulations again to Swagart and his team that he has led fearlessly for years, and will for many years to come! By CHCA student, Taylor Kent

All of the boys had smart starts and hard finishes, racing in a way to be proud of no matter the outcome. The boys had five in the top 16 with Colby Verdin (6th), Dylan Schmitz (9th), Justen Kinder (10th), and Jonathan Stringfellow (13th) earning All-State honors. David Chance finished 16th, one spot outside of earning All-State honors, however, he caught over 15 runners over the last 2 miles.

The varsity girls cross country team finished 9th overall in the 1A/2A division. The team was led by Erin Farill's 19th place finish followed closely by Anna Strachan, Callie Stuart, Haley Bennett, and Elizabeth Noland. The girls competed hard and represented our school well.

Varsity Volleyball Second in State!
It has been a long road for our Girls Varsity Volleyball team and unfortunately the season has come to an end. The girls traveled up to Pelham for the Elite Eight State tournament. They began Wednesday; their first match against West End, winning all 3 sets 25-8, 25-12, 25-11. Their next game was played that evening, where a crowd of Cottage Hill students, cheered the girls on to victory against Lexington, winning all 3 sets, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-19. With these to victories under their belts, the girls went on to championship match against Providence Christian, ranked number two in the state. Sadly, after a long fought battle the girls fell short of victory, losing, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16. But as Coach Newton said "One day, one match doesn't nullify all that this team accomplished." We are very proud of our girls on their sea-son and during the performance throughout the season. They have made us very proud to be Cottage Hill Warriors. By CHCA student, Mary Richardson

Getting to Know Mrs. Greenough
Fran Greenough has been teaching at CHCA for 20 years, since January 1991, teaching grades sixth through twelfth. Ms.Greenough is married to Gary Greenough, and has four beautiful daughters and 12 grandchildren. She majored in English in college and enjoys teaching American Literature. Ms. Greenough has learned many priceless lessons, such as, "I've learned to say I am sorry when I make mistakes. It doesn't bother me at all to apologize to an entire class." She has also learned that students who are the hardest to love are usually the ones who need unconditional love the most. Outside of school Mrs. Greenough attends Luke 4:18 fellowship, and enjoys reading, spending time with family, eating, and teaching. Mrs. Greenough also enjoys listening to music her least favorite being rap, but even then there are a few rap songs that she likes. Mrs. Greenough for 20 years has been improving the lives of faculty and students alike, teaching them many important lessons along the way. By CHCA student, Mary Richardson

Congratulations to our new Azalea Trail Maids! By CHCA student, Taylor Perkins

AP Calculus AB Student Scores
Each year, our high school offers seniors an opportunity to earn college credit through Advance Placement (AP) test in English, Spanish, and Calculus. These courses are designed to be college preparatory courses that are taught at an advanced pace. At the end of the school year in May, students in these classes take a three to four hour exam, dependent upon the time allowed for the course specific test, in an effort to receive the best score possible. Each student will earn a score from one to five, with five being the highest.

For the 2010-2011 academic school year, the AP Calculus AB students had some of the highest marks our program has ever had. Daniel Todd, Laura Walks, and Blake Martin each scored a five, Will Roberson scored a four, and Katelyn Flemming scored a three. We are proud of their achievements and hard work.

Fifty Years Ago Today
Fifty years ago… Cottage Hill Baptist School began with Cottage Hill Baptist Church members becoming aware our city needed a Christian institution to teach its young people the saving grace of Christ.

In 1959, a committee of CHBC church members was formed to study the possibility of the church starting a school. At the time, the Mobile County Public School System was experiencing overcrowding and financial difficulties. On Wednesday, December 14, 1960 the committee unanimously voted to form a grade school.

On September 7, 1961, Cottage Hill Baptist School opened its doors of education for the first time. The first two teachers were Mrs. Mary Waite, who taught first grade, and Mrs. Balzi, who taught the Kindergarten class. Most parents today would be jealous of the first tuition, which was fifteen dollars a month for Kindergarten, twenty dollars a month for Grade School, and a ten dollar registration fee. The school also provided all of the supplies.

Every year CHBS grew and added more and more grades. On Nov. 15, 1997, the ground was broken for a new high school. In the 1999-2000 school year it was completed and the high school students were moved to the new campus.

Fifty years later, CHCA is still going strong and  continuing to teach students about Christ. What once began as a glimpse of a vision has now become a reality for more than 500 current students and many more former students. By CHCA student, Caitlin Harbin

New Emergency Caller System In Place
This year Cottage Hill will be using a school-to-family communications service to deliver both emergency and non-emergency messages to you via telephone and the internet during the 2011-12 school year. Using this notification service, we can quickly contact all families - in a matter of minutes - with urgent news such as school closings, early dismissals, delayed buses or rescheduled activities. We will also use the service to provide timely non-emergency information such as reminders about important meetings or special events at school that involve your children. In the case of school closings, this service is meant to be a compliment to the existing means of communications, TV stations, radio stations, etc. We will continue to utilize ALL of these mediums in the event of a school closure and/or delay so you don't have to wait to get your call for the closing to be official.

AISA/SACS/AdvancED Accreditation Update
AdvancED is the world's largest education community, serving more than 27,000 public and private schools and districts across the United States and in 69 countries along with Alabama Independent School Association and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AISA/SACS/AdvancED.)

CHCA's AISA/SACS/AdvancED accreditation visit took place on Wednesday and Thursday, March 16 and 17.  The accreditation process provides schools with a comprehensive framework for continually improving student learning and school effectiveness.  They require that schools have a clear vision and purpose; have a rigorous curriculum taught through sound, research based methods, provide resources and support for its educational programs; value and communicate with stakeholders; and have a commitment to continuously improve.  The school engages in regular internal self-review and hosts an external review once every five years.

The Quality Assurance Review team members for CHCA came from a variety of backgrounds including college, public and private schools.  The team commended CHCA on the school's hospitality and solid faith based Christian education.  The team's consensus was that CHCA is a well run, highly effective school.

AISA/SACS/AdvancED has recommended CHCA for national accreditation.

Daniel Todd, Finalist In National Merit Scholarship Program
Photo
Daniel Todd, a senior at CHCA, has advanced to Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program of 2011 by demonstrating through distinguished performance his high potential for future academic accomplishment. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) which served as an initial screen of program entrants. CHCA juniors take this test each October.

Daniel was named a Semifinalist in September of 2010, joining a group that represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test. A detailed application must then be submitted which includes an essay and information about the student's participation and leadership in school and community activities.

In March of 2011, the pool of Finalists will be narrowed to 8,200 scholarship winners.
